Social SEO matters now because search has spread out. Many people type questions straight into TikTok, Instagram and YouTube, Google has shown public posts from Instagram professional accounts since July 2025, and Google's AI features cite YouTube and Reddit heavily.
But it is not the whole answer. In our October 2026 studies of 1,500 buyer questions in the UAE, US and Saudi Arabia, under 1% of the sources one AI assistant cited were on social platforms, and AI answers sent buyers to Google Maps far more than to any social app. The businesses that win make the same facts findable in the app, on Google and on their own website.
The shift: three places people now search
1. Inside the apps
Adobe's survey of 807 US consumers, published 17 February 2026, found 49% had used TikTok as a search engine. Pew reported in March 2026 that 63% of US adults under 30 use TikTok, and in a 2024 Pew study 62% of adult TikTok users said they use it to look at product reviews or recommendations.
2. Google, showing social posts
Google added a Perspectives filter for "long- and short-form videos, images and written posts" from forums and social platforms in May 2023. Since July 2025, public posts from Instagram professional accounts can appear in Google and Bing.
3. AI answers, quoting video and forums
Pew found Wikipedia, YouTube and Reddit were the most linked sites in Google's AI summaries in March 2025. BrightEdge measured YouTube at 29.5% of Google AI Overview citations between May 2024 and September 2025.
Each of these is a place a buyer can find you, or find your competitor. A business with a clear website but silent social profiles misses the first two. A business with busy social profiles but a thin website misses most of the third.
What changed, with dates
| Date | What happened | Why it matters |

The Gulf angle: different apps, same rule
If you copy a US or UK social plan in the Gulf, you will put effort in the wrong place.
Saudi Arabia
- Snapchat 83.6%, TikTok 77%, YouTube 75.8% (CST)
- Instagram 40.8%, X 34.9%, Facebook 18.8% (CST)
- Snap's ad tools: 25.3 million Snapchat users in late 2025 (DataReportal)
- X's ad tools: 15.0 million users in late 2025 (DataReportal)
United Arab Emirates
- TikTok: 12.5 million users aged 18 and above in late 2025 (DataReportal)
- Instagram: 8.05 million; YouTube: 8.37 million; Facebook: 9.70 million
- LinkedIn: 10.0 million registered members
- Snapchat: 5.13 million; X: 2.85 million
Ad reach is not the same as daily users, and DataReportal warns these figures count accounts the ad tools can reach. But the pattern is clear. In Saudi Arabia, Snapchat and TikTok come first and Instagram is a minority platform. In the UAE, TikTok, Instagram, YouTube and Facebook all reach most adults, and LinkedIn counts 10.0 million registered members in a country of about 11 million people.
The second Gulf point is language. In our work, most Gulf businesses post only in English, even when many of their buyers speak Arabic. An Arabic caption, Arabic subtitles and an Arabic bio cost little and face far less competition.
Our own data: what one AI assistant actually cited
In October 2026 we asked Claude, with live web search turned on, 500 real buyer questions in each of three markets, and counted every source it cited. Counts below are of cited URLs on the platforms' own domains. (The UAE study page reports 1.3% for social and forum sites together, because it also counts local forums. Here we count only the big social platforms.) This is our data, from one AI assistant, so read it as a strong signal rather than the final word on every engine.
| Study | Sources cited | On social platforms | Which platforms | What else we saw |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| UAE | 4,634 | 44 (0.9%) | TikTok 16, Facebook 13, X 6, LinkedIn 3, Quora 3, YouTube 3 | 15 answers told buyers to check Google Maps; only 2 mentioned Instagram |
| US | 4,587 | 2 | Both LinkedIn | Yelp was mentioned in 100 answers but cited 0 times |
| Saudi Arabia | 4,543 | 26 | LinkedIn 18, Snapchat 8 | 225 answers told buyers to check Google Maps; 7 mentioned Instagram, 3 Snapchat |
What this means
- Social posts are rarely the cited source. 72 of 13,764 sources across the three studies. When an AI writes an answer from a live search, it mostly quotes websites, directories, lists and listings.
- The AI still points people to platforms. Yelp was mentioned in 100 US answers without being cited once. In Saudi Arabia, 225 answers told buyers to check Google Maps. The AI sends buyers off to look, and what they find there is what decides it.
- Different engines, different habits. Third-party studies show Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode cite YouTube far more than ChatGPT does. A plan built on one engine's habits can fail on another.
- So social and website SEO have to work together. The profile and posts get found in the app and in Google. The website, Google Business Profile and listings carry the facts AI quotes. If they all say the same thing, every path leads to the right answer.
Three things people get wrong
"If I go viral, AI will recommend me." Views and citations are different things. TikTok's own advice is about relevance, not reach: it says "quality beats quantity every time" in search, and that hidden keyword text "can get your video flagged for spam." AI tools that write answers from a live search pick pages that state facts clearly. A viral video with no words about what you sell or where gives them nothing to quote.
"Social replaces my website now." Our studies say the opposite. Of 13,764 sources one AI assistant cited across three markets, 72 were on social platforms. The rest were websites, directories, lists and listings. Even Google, which leans on YouTube, gives AI summaries a broad mix: in Pew's March 2025 data, Wikipedia, YouTube and Reddit together made up 15% of the sources in AI summaries, so 85% came from elsewhere.
"One platform's numbers apply everywhere." They don't. YouTube is about 29.5% of AI Overview citations but 0.2% of ChatGPT's in BrightEdge's data. ChatGPT's use of Reddit fell from close to 60% of responses to about 10% in a few weeks in 2025, per Semrush. An Instagram-first plan fits the UAE far better than Saudi Arabia, where CST puts Instagram at 40.8%, behind WhatsApp, Snapchat, TikTok and YouTube. Build on facts that hold across engines: clear profiles, matching details, and a website that answers the question.
Who should care most
| Industry | What buyers search in the apps | What to get right first |
|---|---|---|
| Restaurants and cafés | "Brunch Dubai Marina", "best shawarma Riyadh", "family restaurant with play area" | Area and dish in every caption, menu prices on the website, Snapchat in Saudi Arabia |
| Beauty (salons, clinics, aesthetics) | "Lash extensions JLT", "laser hair removal price Dubai" | Before and after posts with the treatment name, prices, licensed practitioner details |
| Fitness | "Ladies gym Riyadh", "reformer pilates Abu Dhabi" | Class schedule and membership price in pinned posts and on the site |
| Real estate | "2 bed apartment tour JVC", "off plan Dubai 2026" | Area and price in the first line, YouTube tours with chapters, the same broker details everywhere |
| Retail and ecommerce | "Where to buy school bags Dubai", "abaya shop Riyadh" | Product names spoken and captioned, store location tags, product pages that match |
A B2B firm (lawyers, accountants, software) should care too, but mostly about LinkedIn and YouTube. In our Saudi and US studies, LinkedIn was the social platform the AI cited most.
What to do this month
- Pick the two platforms your buyers use most, using the Gulf data above, not habit.
- Write your fact sheet: name, phone in one format, areas, hours, starting prices, website.
- Fix every profile to match it, and make sure Instagram is a public professional account.
- Rewrite your bios to say what you do, where and for whom, in the words buyers search, in English and Arabic.
- Post three videos that each answer one real buyer question, saying the phrase out loud, showing it on screen and writing it in the caption.
- Link your profiles from your website and add Organization schema with sameAs links.
- Search your top phrases on Google, and ask ChatGPT and Gemini your buyer questions. Save what comes back and check again next month.
Our complete social SEO guide covers each platform step by step, and our AI search statistics page has the wider numbers.
How it fits our plans
Social SEO is included in our Growth plan (AED 8,500 a month, USD 2,349 at /us) and our Authority plan (AED 16,000 a month, USD 4,399). We set up and optimise your profiles, write search-friendly captions, titles and descriptions for what you post, align your social facts with your website, add sameAs schema, and track whether your social posts show up in Google and in ChatGPT and Gemini (Google AI) answers. It sits next to the website and listings work those plans already include, because, as our data shows, neither works as well alone. Plans are month to month, no lock-in, no setup fee, with our unconditional 30-day money-back guarantee.
What we don't promise
We don't promise followers, views or viral posts, and we don't buy engagement or run fake accounts. Social SEO makes you easier to find and keeps your facts straight. What buyers do when they find you still depends on your service, your prices and your reviews.
