AI SEO is the work of getting your business named when UAE buyers ask ChatGPT, Gemini or Google's AI answers who to choose. It matters more here than almost anywhere: 73.3% of working-age people in the UAE use generative AI, against 18.8% worldwide. The work has four parts: track the real buyer questions, fix your website so AI can read it, publish pages that answer those questions in English and Arabic, and get mentioned on the sites AI trusts. Then count the leads it brings, not only the traffic.
The basics
What is AI SEO, and is it the same as GEO or AEO?
AI SEO means getting your business named when people ask an AI tool for help: ChatGPT, Gemini, Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode, Perplexity, Claude or Copilot. GEO (generative engine optimisation) and AEO (answer engine optimisation) are industry names for the same work. UAE buyers mostly say "AI SEO". In the Google Trends data for the UAE that we pulled on 20 October 2026, "generative engine optimization" and "answer engine optimization" barely registered, while interest in "AI SEO" came close to "SEO agency" by mid 2026. The goal is not a position on a results page. It is being one of the few names inside the answer.
Why does AI SEO matter more in the UAE than elsewhere?
Because more people here already use AI. Microsoft's AI Diffusion Report puts the UAE first in the world in Q2 2026: 73.3% of working-age people use generative AI, against 33.0% in the US and 18.8% worldwide. ChatGPT sent 80.99% of AI chatbot referral traffic in the UAE in September 2026 and Gemini 13.25% (Statcounter). Google, with 93.47% of UAE search, now puts an AI answer on top of many results: AI Overviews reached the UAE in May 2025 with Arabic support, and AI Mode added Arabic on 8 October 2025. A buyer comparing clinics, free zones or lawyers here is more likely than almost anywhere else to have asked an AI tool first.
Is AI SEO different from SEO? Do I need both?
Good SEO is the base, and AI SEO is a level above it. On Google, a page sitting at position 7 still gets some clicks and some leads. An AI answer has no position 7: it names a few businesses, and it judges "best" mostly by what other people and sites say, not by rank alone. Ahrefs found that only 38% of pages cited in AI Overviews in early 2026 also ranked in Google's top 10 for that search. AI SEO adds what SEO does not track: buyer questions instead of keywords, pages for very specific questions, reviews and outside mentions, Arabic pages, and leads from AI. Our plans include traditional SEO, so you do not pay two agencies.
Which AI tools should a UAE business care about?
Start with where the buyers are. ChatGPT and Gemini together sent about 94% of UAE AI chatbot referrals in September 2026; Copilot (2.26%), Perplexity (2.25%) and Claude (1.23%) were small. Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode sit on top of the search engine that handles 93% of UAE searches, so Google still matters as much as ever, only in a new shape. That is why our plans track ChatGPT and Gemini (Google AI). The work is mostly the same for every engine: the same clear pages, facts, reviews and mentions feed all of them.
How AI picks businesses
How does ChatGPT put an answer together?
In roughly five steps, each one a place where you can drop out:
- It rewrites the question into one or more searches. OpenAI's own example: "good restaurants near me" becomes "top restaurants San Francisco" for a user in that area.
- It sends those searches to third-party search providers and partners. Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode do something similar called "query fan-out": many related searches across subtopics.
- It reads a handful of the pages it finds, as code. Sites that block OpenAI's search crawler, OAI-SearchBot, are not shown in ChatGPT search answers.
- For detailed questions it digs wider. What we see: the more specific the question, the further the answer reaches beyond business websites to reviews, forums and videos.
- It writes a short answer that names a few businesses, often with links.
Why does AI name only about three businesses?
In our checks, a question like "best dentist in Dubai Marina" usually gets about three names, sometimes one, unless the person asks for a longer list. On Google, ten results share the page and people scroll. In an AI answer, if you are not one of the three, that buyer never hears of you. And because AI decides "best" from what others say, a business with fewer but more consistent reviews and mentions can be named ahead of a bigger rival with a stronger Google ranking.
What are hyper-specific questions, and why do they matter?
Compare two questions. "What's the best clinic in Dubai?" is how people type into Google. "I'm 24, I've had an itchy rash on my arm for two weeks, which clinic near JVC can see me this week?" is how people talk to AI. Google says people in AI Mode ask questions two to three times longer than normal searches. Very few businesses have a page that answers the second kind, so the ones that do get cited. The same holds everywhere: "cheapest free zone licence for a one-person e-commerce company with one visa", or "2-bedroom in JVC under AED 1.2 million with a payment plan".
Where does AI get its information about businesses?
For specific questions, we see it start with business websites that answer them. Then it reaches for what other people say. A Peec AI study of 30 million sources cited by ChatGPT, Gemini, Google AI Mode, AI Overviews and Perplexity (US data) found Reddit, YouTube and LinkedIn were the three most-cited sites, followed by Wikipedia and Forbes, with review and directory sites like G2 and Yelp in the top ten. Google (February 2024) and OpenAI (May 2024) both signed deals to use Reddit content. For UAE businesses, add Google Business Profile, local directories and news sites.
Does AI just copy Google's top results?
Less every year. Ahrefs found that 76% of pages cited in AI Overviews ranked in Google's top 10 in July 2025, but only 38% by early 2026, because Google now fans one question out into many related searches. A 2024 study from Princeton and partners (the paper that introduced the term "GEO") found lower-ranked sites gain the most from good answer content: adding cited sources raised the visibility of the site ranked fifth by 115.1%, while the top-ranked site lost 30.3% on average. That is good news for smaller UAE businesses competing with big brands.
Why does AI give a different answer each time I ask?
AI writes each answer fresh. Small changes in wording, location, chat history or model version change the result. A 2026 study by Schulte and colleagues found answers vary across runs, prompts and time, and argued visibility should be measured as a range, not a single result. So one screenshot proves nothing either way. The right way is a fixed list of questions, asked in clean sessions on a schedule, and the share of times you are named. That is why our plans re-check monthly, every two weeks or weekly.
Your website
What should I fix on my website first?
Fix access before content. First, make sure AI crawlers can reach you: check robots.txt and your firewall. OpenAI says sites that block OAI-SearchBot are not shown in ChatGPT search answers, and Cloudflare, a common website firewall, began blocking AI bots by default in July 2025. Second, make sure pages are indexed: Google says a page must be indexed and eligible for a snippet to appear as a link in AI Overviews or AI Mode. Third, put key text in the page code, not in images or scripts. Fourth, publish one clear facts page: legal name, licence number, address, phone, hours, prices and the areas you serve.
Does AI see my website the way I do?
No. It reads the code behind the page. Vercel found that the crawlers behind ChatGPT and Claude fetch JavaScript files but do not run them, so text that a script loads may never be seen. Gemini is the exception, because it uses Googlebot, which does render pages. Common blind spots on UAE sites: price lists posted as images, menus as scanned PDFs, details that live only on Instagram, and tabs that load content later. The test takes a minute: open your page, view the source, and search for your price. If it is not there, assume ChatGPT cannot see it.
What is llms.txt, and do I need one?
llms.txt is a plain text file at yoursite.com/llms.txt that summarises your business and key pages for AI tools. Jeremy Howard proposed it in September 2024. You will hear it described as a welcome mat that AI reads instead of your website. There is no public evidence that ChatGPT or Gemini work that way, and Google says you need no AI text files to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode. We still add one to every client site: it takes under an hour, it does no harm, and writing it forces you to put your key facts in one place. Treat it as housekeeping, not a strategy.
What is schema, and does AI use it?
Schema, or structured data, is a set of labels in the page code that say "this is a business", "this is its phone number", "these are its opening hours", "this is a question and its answer". Google says it uses structured data "to understand the content of the page". Google also says no special schema is needed to appear in its AI answers. So schema helps machines read your facts correctly, which matters when AI is deciding whether you fit a question, but it is not a switch that gets you named. The useful types for most businesses: Organization or LocalBusiness, Service, FAQPage and BreadcrumbList.
What kind of page gets cited by AI?
A page that answers one real question, near the top, with facts only you have: prices in AED, timings, licence numbers, steps, real cases and numbers. AI SEO rewards new information. A page that mixes words from a hundred other sites adds nothing the AI does not already have, so it has no reason to cite it. Research backs this up: in the GEO study, adding cited sources, quotations and statistics improved visibility in AI answers by 30% to 40% on the study's main measure, while keyword stuffing gave little to no improvement.
How many pages does a business need?
One for every real buyer question you can answer well. That adds up fast. A clinic with 15 services in 3 areas, in 2 languages, already has 90 obvious pages before any specific questions. Our plans write or refresh 100, 200 or 300 pages a month, and a refresh counts: updating prices, dates and facts on old pages is part of the work. The count is not the goal, though. Google's spam rules call mass-produced pages with little value "scaled content abuse", including automated translation. Every page should answer something a buyer actually asks.
Should I delete my old blog posts and pages?
Usually not. Accurate old pages are sources AI may already use. When we moved Adjoltz from WhatsApp marketing to AI SEO on 21 October 2026, we kept every old blog post and video and built the new pages on top. One of those old pages, an Arabic blog post about WhatsApp calls in the UAE, is where a ChatGPT visitor landed that same week. Update the facts on old pages, add links to your new ones, and remove or redirect only pages that are wrong or describe something you no longer do.
Outside mentions and reviews
Why do reviews matter so much in AI answers?
Because AI summarises them, and a summary changes how they feel. Picture 92% positive and 8% negative reviews. On a star rating that looks great. Ask AI "is this clinic good?" and, in our experience, it tends to answer in two halves: most people praise one thing, but some people mention another. Those halves get similar space on screen, so a 92 to 8 split can read like 50/50. Google Maps now uses Gemini to condense reviews into short summaries (first in the US, from October 2024), the same mechanism. A few recent complaints now weigh more than they used to.
What should I do about negative reviews?
Answer every one in public, calmly and with facts. Fix the cause and say that you fixed it. Contact the reviewer privately, and if the problem is solved, ask whether they would update the review. Report reviews that break the platform's rules. Then ask happy customers for reviews steadily, after every finished job, on the platforms AI reads: Google, Trustpilot, G2 for software, and your industry's own sites. Never buy, fake or filter reviews. Fake reviews break every major platform's rules, and getting caught costs far more trust than one bad review.
Do business directories still matter?
Yes, and more for AI than for Google. When someone asks "best X in Dubai", list and directory pages match the question word for word, so AI leans on them. For agencies, that means Clutch, GoodFirms (which now has a "Generative Engine Optimization, UAE" category) and Semrush Agencies. Clinics, setup firms, restaurants and real estate brokers each have their own. Most listings are free, but they are slow work: our own plan for Adjoltz is 5 to 7 applications a day, because each one takes time. What matters is a complete profile, the same facts as everywhere else, and real reviews.
Why must my business details match everywhere?
Because AI cross-checks. If your Google Business Profile shows one phone number, your Instagram bio another, and LinkedIn still describes a service you stopped, AI may pick the wrong one, hedge, or leave you out. When we moved Adjoltz to AI SEO, the first task on our list, alongside the homepage and before any new pages, was changing every bio and listing: Google Business Profile, LinkedIn, Instagram and YouTube. Check these on every profile: business name, category, one-line description, phone and WhatsApp, address, hours, website and licence number.
Should my business be on Reddit, YouTube and LinkedIn?
Those three top the list of sites AI cites, so they are worth the effort if you can be useful there under your real name. On Reddit, answer real questions in UAE communities where you know the answer, say who you are, and do not drop links in every reply; moderators remove ads. On YouTube, make short videos that each answer one buyer question, with the question in the title and a written description. On LinkedIn, post as the founder with real numbers and real cases. Fake accounts and paid praise get found, and they can hurt more than silence.
How do outside mentions get earned, and how many are realistic?
Mostly through outreach: finding the sites, lists, journalists and creators that already cover your category, and giving them something worth using, such as data, a quote or a useful tool. Our planning estimate: one person contacting 10 to 20 relevant people a day lands about 1 or 2 good placements a month. That is why our bigger plans promise outside mentions every two months (Growth) or every month (Authority), not dozens. Ahrefs found brand mentions across the web correlated far more with AI Overview visibility (0.664) than backlinks did (0.218), though Ahrefs itself stresses that correlation is not causation.
Is news PR worth paying for?
Sometimes. A feature on a news site that AI already trusts can carry real weight, especially for "is X legit?" and "best X" questions. But news coverage costs money: publication fees, PR firm time, or both. That is why we price news PR as a separate add-on and never hide it inside a plan, while directory listings, which are mostly free, are part of the normal work. Before paying, ask one question: does AI already cite this publication when people ask about my industry? If not, the story may help your brand but not your AI answers.
Arabic
Do people in the UAE really ask AI in Arabic?
Yes, and the tools are built for it: Google's AI Overviews supported Arabic from their UAE launch in May 2025, and AI Mode added Arabic on 8 October 2025. No public figure exists for the share of UAE AI questions asked in Arabic, so be careful with anyone who quotes one. What we have is our own data. Of the first 4 ChatGPT visits we tracked on adjoltz.com, on 20 and 21 October 2026, one landed on our Arabic blog post. ChatGPT cited an Arabic page. In our market scan, at least 12 firms claimed English and Arabic AI search work, but none based in the UAE that we found published named-client Arabic results.
Can I just install a translation plugin?
It depends on how it works. Many widgets translate in the visitor's browser: the page code stays English, and Arabic only appears on the screen. Think of it as an outfit the browser puts on for the reader, while the AI crawler looks at what is underneath. Vercel found the ChatGPT and Claude crawlers do not run JavaScript, and Google recommends a separate URL for each language, warning that it may not find versions that change on the fly. Some plugins do create real Arabic URLs, which is better, but a machine-translated site with little added value can fall under Google's scaled content rules. Test it: view the source of the Arabic page.
Why can a bad Arabic page be worse than no Arabic page?
This is our working theory from what we see, not a published study. AI tools try to answer with as little effort as possible. When someone asks in Arabic and an Arabic page seems to answer, the AI tends to use it, even if a better English page exists. If no Arabic page exists, it has to find English sources and translate them, which takes more work, and the result is often more careful. So a weak Arabic page gets cited. If an Arabic page claims a cream clears acne in half a day, an Arabic answer may repeat it as fact. Wrong prices, old hours and claims your regulator would not allow travel the same way.
Should Arabic pages use Modern Standard Arabic or dialect?
For written pages, clear Modern Standard Arabic: it is what Google's AI Mode launched with, and readers across the UAE and the Gulf understand it. Track questions the way people really type them, which is often a mix of dialect, standard Arabic and English words. Keep brand and product names in Latin script so they match your other listings. And write for an Arabic reader, not word for word from English: the order of the information and the examples should feel natural. Doing both languages roughly doubles the measuring and writing, which is why our bilingual plan costs more.
Measuring and leads
How do I know if AI is sending me customers?
Use four signals together. First, tagged visits: ChatGPT adds utm_source=chatgpt.com to many links it cites, and on adjoltz.com those visits arrive with the tag and no referrer. Second, Google Analytics 4, which since May 2026 has a default "AI Assistant" channel for AI referrers it recognises. Third, Search Console, which counts clicks from AI Overviews and AI Mode inside normal Google traffic, so you cannot split them out there. Fourth, and most reliable: ask every new lead "how did you find us?" Copied phone numbers, in-app browsers and links tapped inside AI apps leave no trace in analytics.
Why measure leads, not traffic?
Because AI sends fewer visitors who are further along. Pew found people clicked a normal result on 8% of Google visits with an AI summary, against 15% without one. Ahrefs said AI search was 0.5% of its traffic but 12.1% of its signups, converting 23 times better than its normal search visitors. Adobe found AI-referred visitors to US retail sites converted 54% better than other traffic in May 2026, a reversal from a year earlier. Our own sample is tiny but points the same way: 1 of our first 4 ChatGPT visitors tapped WhatsApp. If a report shows only traffic, you could watch traffic fall while leads rise.
What is an AI visibility score?
It is the share of your tracked questions in which AI names you, on a given date, split by tool and language. For example, named in 2 of 10 questions on day one. It only means something if the question list is fixed, the questions are asked in clean sessions and repeated, and every result has a screenshot behind it. Be careful with "proprietary scores" that have no published definition. A good score also records position, first or third, and accuracy: whether the facts AI states about you are right.
Can I track WhatsApp leads that came from AI?
Partly. When AI cites your website and the visitor taps WhatsApp on your site, a tagged link and a site pixel can record it. That is how we saw 1 of our first 4 ChatGPT visitors tap WhatsApp on adjoltz.com. What you cannot see: a number copied from the answer, a WhatsApp link tapped straight inside the AI app, or a friend forwarding the chat. So the most reliable tool is still a question in your first reply to every lead: "Happy to help. How did you hear about us?" Log the answer next to the lead.
My ChatGPT traffic dropped in October 2026. Did AI stop recommending me?
Maybe not. From about 9 October 2026, after OpenAI's GPT-6 release, analysts reported many ChatGPT links opening with no utm_source=chatgpt.com tag and no referrer, so analytics filed them as direct visits. LLM Pulse measured labelled ChatGPT sessions falling about 46% from 9 to 11 October while total traffic stayed flat, and Adobe's Cedric Huesler saw direct visits rise by a similar amount across about 500 pages. OpenAI had not confirmed a change by 20 October. On adjoltz.com, ChatGPT visits on 20 and 21 October carried the tag. Check whether your direct traffic rose at the same moment.
Cost and timing
How much does AI SEO cost in the UAE?
Published UAE monthly prices in our 20 October 2026 scan fell into three bands: entry AED 900 to 4,500, mid AED 6,000 to 9,000, and top AED 12,000 to 15,000. Where one agency sells both, its AI tiers cost 1.8 to 2.7 times its SEO tiers. Globally, First Page Sage, itself an agency, compiled 1,146 quotes from 214 agencies in 2026 and put the median AI search retainer at USD 6,850 a month (about AED 25,200), 45% above the SEO median. Ours: AI Visibility Audit AED 1,950; Foundation AED 4,500, Growth AED 8,500, Authority AED 16,000 a month, with a 3-month minimum and no setup fee. Our buyer's guide explains how to compare offers.
How long until AI starts naming my business?
Some fixes show up within a few weeks: unblocking crawlers, correcting facts, and pages for questions nobody else answers. Bigger changes, like outside mentions and review patterns, usually take 60 to 90 days, which is why we review everything together on day 90. Speed depends on your category. Where rivals have not started, it is faster. For our own category, AI SEO agencies in Dubai, we expect about a month, because few agencies there have done the work yet. That is a plan, not a result; we will publish what happens on our case studies page.
Why does it matter to start before your competitors?
Because the gap is easiest to close while it is empty. Today, few UAE businesses have pages for specific buyer questions, consistent facts across profiles, or Arabic pages AI can read. In that space, modest work can get you named, and the GEO study suggests smaller, lower-ranked sites gain the most. Once your rivals do the same work, you compete on equal terms and every step costs more. The reverse also holds: if a rival does it first, they get named for the questions you used to win on Google, and you are the one catching up.
OpenAI says nobody can guarantee placement. How can anyone offer a guarantee?
Both things are true. OpenAI is right that no one controls what ChatGPT says, and anyone promising "#1 on ChatGPT" is promising something they cannot deliver. Our guarantee does not claim control over the answer. It is a promise about money: if you are not named for at least 3 commercial questions within 30 days, on the question list you approved, we refund 100% of what you paid. It works because the target is small, specific and checkable with screenshots. We expect some clients to miss it, and the refund exists for exactly that case.
Doing it yourself vs hiring
Can I do AI SEO myself?
Yes, the basics. Write 10 buyer questions and check them on ChatGPT and Gemini once a month. Make sure your site lets AI crawlers in and shows key facts as text. Make your details match on every profile. Write one clear page for each common question, with real prices and facts. Ask happy customers for reviews every week. A single-location business can get far this way. It gets hard at scale: checking 40 or more questions in two languages on a schedule, writing many pages without making them thin, doing Arabic well, and earning mentions on other sites.
When is an agency better than a freelancer or an in-house hire?
When the job is bigger than one person. Our Growth plan, for example, tracks 40 + 40 questions on two AI tools every two weeks: about 320 answers a month to run, read and log, on top of 200 pages and outreach. One person can do part of that, rarely all of it. Knowing which levers move AI answers matters even more than volume; publishing pages without that is shooting in the dark. For a small business, a freelancer who specialises in AI search can beat a big agency. Ask either one the same questions in our buyer's guide.
What will an agency need from me?
Less time than most owners fear. Access to your website, or a developer who acts within a few days. Google Search Console and Google Business Profile access. One person who approves pages quickly, because nothing ships without approval. Real facts: prices, licence numbers, team names, case numbers you are happy to publish. And about 30 minutes a month for the report. If an agency needs nothing from you, ask what it is changing, because real AI SEO work touches your site and your listings.
