AI always names restaurants. Every answer from both assistants named at least one: Claude with live search gave 5.7 restaurants per answer, and Gemini answering from memory gave 7.9. But the lists are wide and thin. The most-named restaurant in live search came up in only 3 answers out of 50, and the two assistants named even one restaurant in common on just 10 of the 48 questions both answered.
The answers are built from TripAdvisor and "best of" lists more than in any other industry we tested: 65.1% of the pages Claude cited had a "best", "top" or "أفضل" style title, and 23.3% were review platforms. Your own website matters less here than your reviews and your place on area guides. In Arabic, 3 of 25 answers described restaurants in Saudi Arabia instead of the UAE.
What we asked AI about restaurants
We wrote 50 questions the way people in the UAE ask them: 25 in English and 25 in Arabic, across Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Sharjah and Ajman. Most were about one area and one occasion, not "best restaurant in Dubai". The English set had 11 comparing questions, 9 about a specific situation, 3 about price and 2 urgent ones. The Arabic set mirrors those types. Here are 12 of them, word for word.
| Question | Language | Type |
|---|---|---|
| Best restaurant in Dubai Marina for a birthday dinner? | English | Compare |
| What are the best Indian restaurants in Sharjah? | English | Compare |
| Best brunch in Dubai for families with kids? | English | Specific situation |
| Cheap but good restaurants in JVC? | English | Price |
| Restaurants open late near Downtown Dubai? | English | Urgent |
| Best place for Arabic breakfast in Al Nahda? | English | Specific situation |
| Top rated cafe to work from in Ajman | English | Compare |
| Romantic restaurant with a view in Dubai for an anniversary? | English | Specific situation |
| أفضل شاورما في الخليج التجاري؟ (Best shawarma in Business Bay?) | Arabic | Specific situation |
| مطاعم رخيصة وممتازة في النهدة؟ (Cheap and excellent restaurants in Al Nahda?) | Arabic | Price |
| أفضل مطاعم هندية في دبي هيلز؟ (Best Indian restaurants in Dubai Hills?) | Arabic | Compare |
| أفضل كافيه للعمل في الشارقة؟ (Best cafe to work from in Sharjah?) | Arabic | Compare |
Which restaurants did AI name most often?
This table shows how many answers named each restaurant, out of 50 for Claude and 48 for Gemini. We merged spellings of the same name, including Arabic and Latin versions. This is what two AI assistants said on one day, 21 October 2026. It is not our ranking and not an endorsement of any restaurant.
| Restaurant | Claude, live search (of 50) | Gemini, from memory (of 48) |
|---|---|---|
| Calicut Notebook | 2 | 7 |
| Al Mallah | 1 | 6 |
| At.mosphere | 3 | 3 |
| Pierchic | 2 | 3 |
| Gazebo | 3 | 2 |
| Operation Falafel | 3 | 2 |
| Socialicious | 3 | 0 |
Look at how low these numbers are. No restaurant was named in more than 3 of the 50 live-search answers. Restaurants were the most scattered category in the whole study: the five most-named restaurants took only 4% of all mentions in live search and 6% from memory, the lowest of the 10 industries. Every question about a new area or occasion produced a new set of names.
The two lenses also disagreed. Gemini's top two from memory, Calicut Notebook and Al Mallah, are long-running names that Claude's live search named only 2 times and 1 time. Of all the restaurant names Gemini gave from memory, only 7.3% appeared anywhere in Claude's 50 live-search answers (across all industries the figure was 20.3%). Where they did agree, it was on famous places with a clear occasion: both named At.mosphere and Pierchic for an anniversary dinner with a view, in English and in Arabic.
Even one assistant is not steady. We asked "Best restaurant in Dubai Marina for a birthday dinner?" to Gemini twice, about 20 minutes apart. Both answers put Pier 7 first and shared five names. On the Arabic version, the two answers put different restaurants first and shared one name.
Where the answers came from
Claude cited 455 pages for these 50 answers, 9.1 per answer. Restaurants were the industry where businesses' own websites counted least: just over half of the citations (51.0%), against 72% to 91% everywhere else.
| Type of source | Share of 455 citations |
|---|---|
| Restaurant websites and other sites | 51.0% |
| Review platforms (TripAdvisor) | 23.3% |
| Directories and listings (TimeOut, Bayut, Property Finder, Zomato, Talabat, OpenTable) | 15.8% |
| Wikipedia | 6.6% |
| Social media and forums | 2.0% |
| News and media | 1.3% |
Across all 10 industries, businesses' own sites made up 79.4% of citations. For restaurants it was 51.0%, the lowest of any industry. The rest came from a short list of sites:
- TripAdvisor. tripadvisor.com was cited 91 times, and 106 times counting its other country sites. It appeared in 38 of the 50 answers. The answers repeated its numbers directly. Claude described one Deira restaurant as "highly rated at 4.9 out of 5 bubbles on Tripadvisor" and a Sharjah one as "Highly rated with 189 reviews on Tripadvisor".
- Property portal blogs. Bayut (26 citations) and Property Finder (13) were cited in 27 of the 50 answers. These were not property listings. They were area guides such as MyBayut's "Best Indian Restaurants in Al Barsha: Barbeque Nation & More", and Barbeque Nation was then named in the answer about Indian food in Al Barsha. Portals write a guide for almost every area, so they match area questions well.
- Guides and list sites. The Michelin Guide (15), TimeOut Dubai (13), Wanderlog (12) and dubairestaurants.guide (11). 12 of the 15 Michelin citations were in Arabic answers.
- Wikipedia. 30 citations, 27 of them in Arabic answers, mostly loosely related pages about landmarks and hotels, and one about a street in Riyadh.
What this means. For a restaurant, AI repeats what diners and guide writers already say about you. A great website with no reviews and no list mentions gives the assistant little to work with. A strong TripAdvisor page plus a mention in two or three area guides gives it the exact sentence it needs.
English vs Arabic
| English | Arabic | |
|---|---|---|
| Claude: answers naming at least one restaurant | 100% | 100% |
| Claude: restaurants per answer | 6.6 | 4.9 |
| Gemini: restaurants per answer | 8.2 | 7.7 |
| Claude: list-style share of cited pages | 72.8% | 57.3% |
| Claude: review platform share of cited pages | 30.3% | 23.3% |
| Claude: Wikipedia share of cited pages | 1.3% | 11.9% |
Arabic answers still named restaurants every time, and 87.2% of the pages cited in them were Arabic pages. But they named fewer, and they leaned more on Wikipedia and less on reviews. Most of the overlap between the two lenses came from English questions. In Arabic they rarely named the same restaurant.
Three Arabic answers, 3 of 25, left the UAE:
- Asked for the best Indian restaurants in Al Nahda (النهدة), Claude explained that Al Nahda is "an area in Jeddah" and listed Jeddah restaurants.
- Asked for cheap, good restaurants in Al Nahda, it listed places that our review placed in Saudi Arabia.
- Asked for the best shawarma in Business Bay (الخليج التجاري), it answered for a district of the same name in Riyadh.
No English restaurant answer went to the wrong country. Al Nahda is a district name in Dubai, in Sharjah and in Riyadh, and the Arabic name for Business Bay reads like a general phrase, so an Arabic search can easily land on the wrong city.
Three real answers
Romantic restaurant with a view in Dubai for an anniversary?
Claude, live search, named first: Pierchic, Burj Al Arab, At.mosphere.
Gemini, from memory, named first: Thiptara, Armani/Mediterraneo, At.mosphere.
One of the few questions where the lenses agreed: both named At.mosphere and Pierchic.
What are the best Indian restaurants in Deira?
Claude, live search, named first: Mehman, Gazebo Restaurant, Calicut Notebook. It opened with Mehman, "highly rated at 4.9 out of 5 bubbles on Tripadvisor".
Gemini, from memory, named first: Aappa Kadai, Puranmal, Calicut Notebook.
أفضل شاورما في الخليج التجاري؟ (Best shawarma in Business Bay?)
Claude, live search: answered for "حي الخليج التجاري بالرياض", the district of that name in Riyadh, and named three shawarma places there.
Gemini, from memory: placed Business Bay in Dubai correctly and named Bayt Al Shawarma, Zaatar W Zeit and Shawarma Factory first.
The last one matters. Live search is not always more accurate than memory. When the Arabic pages for an area are thin, search can pull in the wrong country, and the assistant reports it with confidence.
What it costs to buy this attention instead
If you skip AI answers and pay for the top of Google instead, this is the price. Figures are average monthly searches and the top-of-page bid range from Google Ads Keyword Planner, UAE, 21 Oct 2026.
| Search | Monthly searches (UAE) | Competition | Top-of-page bid range |
|---|---|---|---|
| restaurants dubai marina | 4,400 | Medium | AED 1.87 to 4.96 |
| best brunch dubai | 2,900 | Medium | AED 2.17 to 5.68 |
| مطاعم دبي (restaurants Dubai) | 2,900 | Medium | AED 1.69 to 5.70 |
Restaurant clicks are cheap. At the top of the range, 100 clicks on "restaurants dubai marina" cost about AED 496. Demand also swings: that search peaked at 8,100 a month in October 2025, December 2025 and January 2026, and fell to 1,900 in March and April 2026. The Arabic search for restaurants in Dubai had as many monthly searches as "best brunch dubai", so Arabic diners are not a side market.
The catch is that a click comes after the diner has already searched. More and more diners now ask an assistant for "a romantic place with a view" and get five names before they open Google. Ads cannot buy a place on that list.
What a restaurant should do
- Fix your TripAdvisor page first. It was in 38 of 50 answers. Make sure the name, area, cuisine, hours and price level are right, add recent photos, and reply to reviews. The assistant repeats your rating and review count.
- Get into the area guides the answers read. TimeOut Dubai, the MyBayut and Property Finder area blogs, Wanderlog lists and dubairestaurants.guide. These are written per area and per cuisine ("Indian restaurants in Al Barsha"), which is exactly how diners ask. Send each editor your facts: area, cuisine, price for two, signature dishes.
- Build pages for occasions and areas on your own site. One page each for birthday dinners, family brunch, late-night food or working from your cafe, with hours, price for two and what is included. Claude quoted one JVC restaurant's "Average cost for two: AED 65" directly. A number like that is easy to repeat.
- Write a real Arabic page. Name your area and city in both scripts, for example "النهدة، دبي" or "النهدة، الشارقة", so an Arabic search cannot place you in Jeddah.
- Keep one name everywhere. From memory, Gemini named long-running places. Use the same name, area and phone on your site, Google Business Profile, TripAdvisor, delivery apps and social profiles, so future models learn one clear version of you.
- Check more than one assistant, every month. Ask your 10 real guest questions in English and Arabic on ChatGPT and Gemini, and write down who gets named. The lists change too much for one check to mean anything.
If you want this done for you, our free AI check runs your questions on ChatGPT and Gemini and shows you who gets named instead of you. We don't promise you will be first on every list. No one can, because the lists change from day to day.
Method and limits
How we did it. On 21 October 2026 we asked 500 real UAE buyer questions, 50 per industry (25 English, 25 Arabic). Lens 1 was Claude with live web search, which answered all 500 and listed its sources. Lens 2 was Gemini Flash-Lite through the Gemini API, answering from memory without live search; it answered 478 before the free tier's daily limit, including 48 of the 50 restaurant questions. We coded every business named with one rule set, leaving out platforms such as Talabat, government bodies, product brands and named people.
Limits. One day and one run per question, and AI answers change daily. Claude's search runs on a US-based index. Neither lens is exactly what a diner sees in the ChatGPT or Gemini apps. Names were matched with simple rules, so overlaps are lower bounds. We did not check that every named restaurant is open. The full method is in the UAE AI visibility study.
