AI names an auto business almost every time. Claude with live web search named at least one in 48 of our 50 questions (96%), with 4.6 per answer. But auto had the biggest spam layer of the 10 industries in our US study: 23.6% of sources were spam-style pages on sites with nothing to do with cars, and for car rentals and car washes they were most of what the search found.
The business named most often had a page for each city: Tint World was named in all 8 window tinting and ceramic coating questions, through its own store pages. Review platforms mattered more here than anywhere else (8.7% of sources), and Google business pages carried the tow truck answers. The lists were otherwise wide open: 92.7% of the 192 businesses named appeared in only one answer.
What we asked
50 questions written the way US drivers ask them. The 40 English questions were set in Austin, Tampa, Charlotte, San Antonio, Houston, Denver, Miami and New York (5 each), covering 10 needs: auto repair, honest mechanics, independent BMW mechanics, car washes, ceramic coating, window tinting, tow trucks, used car dealers, car rental without a credit card and cheap car insurance. They are tagged 16 specific, 12 compare, 4 price, 4 trust and 4 urgent. The 10 Spanish questions were set in Boston and Phoenix (5 each), tagged "mixed". Six of them, word for word:
| Question | Language | Intent |
|---|---|---|
| Honest mechanic in Tampa? | English | trust |
| Tow truck in Denver right now? | English | urgent |
| Cheapest car insurance in Miami, and which company is good? | English | price |
| Best place to rent a car in Austin without a credit card? | English | specific |
| Mejor taller mecánico en Phoenix (best auto repair shop in Phoenix) | Spanish | mixed |
| Grúa ahora mismo en Boston (tow truck right now in Boston) | Spanish | mixed |
How often AI named a business
Claude named at least one business in 96% of auto answers, above the study average of 93.8%, and hedged on only 2 (4%). No names were individual people.
| Question type (English, 4 each) | Named anyone | Per answer | Off-topic sources |
|---|---|---|---|
| Car wash | 4 of 4 | 5.8 | 56.4% |
| Used car dealer | 4 of 4 | 5.8 | 22.2% |
| Auto repair shop | 4 of 4 | 5.5 | 45.9% |
| Window tinting | 4 of 4 | 5.5 | 5.4% |
| Ceramic coating, tow truck, insurance | 12 of 12 | 5.0 | 0.0% to 10.5% |
| Honest mechanic | 4 of 4 | 4.5 | 5.3% |
| Rent a car without a credit card | 3 of 4 | 4.7 | 88.9% |
| Independent BMW mechanic | 4 of 4 | 2.0 | 27.0% |
Two weak spots stand out. Independent BMW mechanic answers named just 2.0 shops on average, and in Austin and New York only one. The New York answer was built from 9 YourMechanic pages and one spam page, and its single shop was outside the city. Rental questions drew almost nothing but spam: 88.9% of their sources were off-topic pages, and the Austin answer, with all 9 sources of that kind, named no one.
The two hedges were that Austin rental question and the Spanish tow truck question in Boston, covered below.
Where the answers came from
Claude cited 462 sources for the 50 answers, 9.2 per answer, from 178 websites, sorted into the same nine types as the main study.
| Type of source | Auto (462) | All 10 industries (4,587) |
|---|---|---|
| Directories, marketplaces and comparison sites | 32.7% | 37.3% |
| Off-topic hosts (spam-style pages on unrelated sites) | 23.6% | 15.9% |
| Businesses' own websites and other sites | 19.0% | 29.0% |
| Review platforms | 8.7% | 3.2% |
| News and media | 8.4% | 11.0% |
| Social media and forums | 3.7% | 1.6% |
| Government sites | 1.9% | 0.9% |
| Press releases | 1.1% | 1.2% |
| Wikipedia | 0.9% | 0.1% |
Spam outweighed businesses' own websites (23.6% against 19.0%). Directories still showed up in 41 of the 50 answers, and each need had its own:
| Site | Citations | Answers | What it is, and where it showed up |
|---|---|---|---|
| yourmechanic.com | 25 | 8 | Mobile mechanic marketplace; BMW and honest mechanic answers |
| tintworld.com | 23 | 8 | A tint and coating franchise's own store pages |
| business.google.com | 17 | 8 | Google business pages; mostly tow truck answers |
| lantern.llc | 13 | 8 | Local business directory; repair shop answers, in both languages |
| bostonmagazine.com | 12 | 3 | City magazine "best of" picks, cited in Spanish Boston answers |
| local.yahoo.com | 9 | 4 | Yahoo Local listings; tow truck answers |
| moneygeek.com, nerdwallet.com, insurify.com | 8, 7, 7 | 4, 3, 5 | Insurance comparison sites; insurance answers |
Google business pages are where auto stands apart. Auto answers cited them 17 times, in 8 of the 18 answers across all 10 industries that cited one at all. The tow truck answers needed exactly what those pages hold: hours and a phone number.
The spam layer: 109 sources from 51 unrelated websites, the most citations of any industry, in 28 answers, and most of the sources in 9 of them. Described without naming the sites, which are often victims: a US state government subdomain with "8+ Top-Rated Best Car Wash in Miami, FL", a Welsh test login server with "Car Wash Near Me Tampa", a mail server carrying "Austin Airport Rental Cars: Score Fabulous Deals", and a Chilean website with "Best Of 15 Auto Repair In Austin". In Houston, 44.4% of auto sources were pages like these.
Yelp was mentioned in 21 answers and cited in none; Google reviews or Maps in 25. In at least 26 answers Claude warned its sources were marketing, sponsored or low quality.
The businesses named most often
The 50 answers named 192 different businesses in 222 mentions, and 92.7% were named only once. The top five took 10.8% of mentions. Named most often in our answers:
| Business, as named | Answers (of 50) | Where |
|---|---|---|
| Tint World | 8 | All 8 tinting and ceramic coating questions, one in each English city |
| GEICO | 5 | All 4 English insurance questions, and Phoenix in Spanish |
| State Farm | 4 | All 4 English insurance questions |
| Progressive | 4 | All 4 English insurance questions |
| Enterprise | 3 | Car rental: San Antonio, Houston, New York |
Two patterns explain the list. Tint World's own store pages were cited 23 times, in every city we asked about; the Tampa answer quoted its store address and the list of areas it serves. The insurers were named from comparison sites: the 4 English insurance answers drew almost every source from sites like MoneyGeek, NerdWallet and Insurify, had no spam at all, and named only carriers. No local insurance agency was named.
Not a ranking. Counts from one assistant on one day, 21 October 2026, not our ranking or an endorsement. A business missing here may be excellent, and the lists change from day to day.
City by city
Each city had 5 questions: notes, not rankings.
| City | Named anyone | Per answer | Off-topic sources | Directory sources |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Houston | 5 of 5 | 5.6 | 44.4% | 17.8% |
| Austin | 4 of 5 | 5.0 | 39.1% | 15.2% |
| New York | 5 of 5 | 3.6 | 37.0% | 30.4% |
| San Antonio | 5 of 5 | 4.2 | 31.1% | 22.2% |
| Charlotte and Miami | 5 of 5 each | 4.4 and 5.4 | 23.4% and 22.2% | 42.6% and 37.8% |
| Tampa | 5 of 5 | 5.6 | 16.3% | 55.1% |
| Denver | 5 of 5 | 5.2 | 2.1% | 44.7% |
| Boston and Phoenix (Spanish) | 4 of 5 and 5 of 5 | 3.8 and 3.4 | 4.3% and 17.8% | 31.9% and 26.7% |
- Texas cities: Houston, Austin and San Antonio carried the heaviest spam, mostly mass-produced car rental, repair shop and dealer list pages.
- Denver: almost no spam. The car wash answer was built from review platform pages and named 8 washes.
- Tampa: the most directory-driven city. The tow truck answer was built mostly from Yahoo Local listings and named 7 companies.
What the Spanish questions showed
| English (40) | Spanish (10) | |
|---|---|---|
| Answers naming at least one business | 97.5% | 90% |
| Businesses per answer, when any | 4.9 | 3.6 |
| Hedged | 2.5% | 10% |
| Sources with a "best" or "top" style title | 28.4% | 20.7% |
Only 14 of the 92 sources behind Spanish answers (15.2%) were Spanish pages, and 9 of those 14 sat in one answer: "Seguro de auto barato en Boston", built on an Argentine insurer named Boston Seguros, as our main study reported. Only 3 of the 10 answers cited any Spanish page. Two Phoenix answers also pulled in Mexican yellow pages, which the answers set aside or did not use.
The new lesson here is vocabulary. In Spanish, grúa means both tow truck and crane. The Boston question "Grúa ahora mismo en Boston" came back with news about construction cranes and 311 reports, and named no one. The Phoenix version found one towing company among pages about industrial cranes and equipment rental. A towing company that writes "servicio de grúa para autos" and "remolque" on a Spanish page, with the city and state, has the answer almost to itself.
Three real answers
Best place to rent a car in Austin without a credit card?
The results don't name a best place to rent a car in Austin without a credit card. Most of the pages look like low-quality, keyword-stuffed content, so I'd treat them with caution.
Best independent BMW mechanic in New York?
The search turned up few solid recommendations for independent BMW shops in New York City itself, and the sources are weak.
Grúa ahora mismo en Boston
La búsqueda no devolvió ningún servicio de grúa (de remolque) en Boston. Los resultados trataban sobre grúas de construcción y otros temas:
What an auto business should do
- Keep your Google Business Profile exact. Hours, phone, services and service area. Auto answers cited Google business pages more than any other industry, above all for towing.
- Claim the directories your need showed up in. Mechanics: YourMechanic and Lantern. Towing: Yahoo Local and roadside directories such as CurbsideSOS. Car washes and detailers: review platforms, which built the Denver answer. Dealers: CarEdge, cited in the used car answers.
- Publish one page per service and location. "Window tinting in Tampa, Florida", with the address, the areas you serve, prices and film brands. That is how Tint World was named in all 8 tinting and coating questions.
- Answer the awkward question in plain text. If you rent cars on a debit card, or tow 24/7, say so on the branch page. The Austin rental answer found only spam and named no one.
- Insurance agencies: answer the price question yourself. The answers named carriers from comparison sites and no local agency. A page with sample quotes for your city is the only opening we saw.
- Write city and state, and write real Spanish pages. "Taller mecánico en Phoenix, Arizona", "servicio de grúa para autos en Boston, Massachusetts". Use the words that mean your service, not just the dictionary ones.
- Keep Google and Yelp reviews healthy. 21 answers told drivers to check Yelp and 25 Google.
- Measure the same questions monthly on ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude, with dated screenshots.
What we'd do for you, and what we don't promise
We do this work for US auto businesses, remotely from Dubai, with traditional SEO included and ChatGPT and Gemini (Google AI) tracked on every plan. It starts with a free AI check: 10 real customer questions and the businesses AI names instead of you. The AI Visibility Audit (30 questions, 4 AI tools, 3 competitors, screenshots and a 90-day plan) is USD 549. Monthly plans are USD 1,249 (Foundation), USD 2,349 (Growth) and USD 4,399 (Authority), month to month, with no lock-in and no setup fee. Details at adjoltz.com/us.
In the first 30 days of any plan, if AI does not name you for at least 3 commercial questions on the list you approved, or you are unhappy for any other reason, we refund 100% of what you paid, in cash, within 7 working days (guarantee rules). We don't promise a top spot on any assistant, rankings, paid places on "best of" lists, car counts, or a US office. We do not have one.
Method and limits. 50 auto questions from our 500-question US AI visibility study 2026, each sent once, word for word, to Claude with Anthropic's live web search tool on 21 October 2026, between 21:31 and 23:12 UTC. Source types were coded by us with hand-checked lists, so the off-topic share is a floor, and simple name matching may make the "named once" share slightly high. One assistant, one day, one run: Pew Research Center found 44% of US adults use ChatGPT and 6% use Claude. We did not check that every named business is licensed or open. Every question and its numbers: study data (CSV).
