How click to WhatsApp ads work

A click to WhatsApp ad runs on Facebook or Instagram like any other Meta ad. The difference is the button. Instead of opening a website or a form, it opens a WhatsApp chat with your business number, usually with a pre-filled first message. The person taps send, and you now have a conversation, a phone number and a named contact, all in the app they already use every day.

When that first message arrives through the WhatsApp Business API, it carries a referral block that tells your system which ad it came from, including a click ID called ctwa_clid. Keep that ID. It is what lets you tell Meta later which chats turned into leads and sales.

Inside Ads Manager you can pick Messaging, Leads or Sales as the objective with WhatsApp as the destination. Meta lists conversations, leads and purchases as the things these ads can optimise for. Which one works depends on how much conversion data you send back, which we cover below.

The 72-hour window: why the messages are almost free

Meta treats a chat that starts from a click to WhatsApp ad or a Facebook Page call-to-action button as a free entry point. Per Meta's pricing docs, if the person messages you from the WhatsApp app on Android or iOS and you reply within 24 hours, your reply is free and a 72-hour free entry point window opens. While it is open, every message type you send is free, templates included.

That is why the calculator puts WhatsApp message cost close to zero for anything that happens in the first three days. After 72 hours, and once the 24-hour customer service window has closed, you can only start a conversation again with an approved template, and each one is billed by Meta. In the UAE a marketing template is roughly AED 0.183 and a utility template roughly AED 0.058 (set by Meta, approximate). Our UAE WhatsApp rate card has the current numbers, and the WhatsApp template checker tells you which category a follow-up will be billed as.

The catch: the free window only opens if you reply within 24 hours. Miss that and you have paid for the click and lost the free window too.

Speed to reply decides the ROI

The ad buys you a conversation. What happens in the next few minutes decides whether it becomes a sale. Someone who tapped your ad is looking at their phone right now. Answer in two minutes and you are talking to an interested person. Answer the next morning and you may be one of several businesses they messaged.

Play with the "% who reply" and "% qualified" fields in the calculator and you will see it: a small change in those rates moves cost per sale far more than shaving a few fils off the cost per conversation. Our guide on speed to lead for Dubai real estate goes through why, and WhatsApp lead generation in Dubai covers how we set up the front desk that answers first, any hour, in Arabic or English.

Tracking conversions back to Meta

If the only signal Meta gets is "a conversation started", it will find you more people who start conversations. Some of them buy. Many just ask the price and leave. To get better leads you have to tell Meta which chats turned into qualified leads and purchases.

Meta's Conversions API for business messaging does this. You send events such as LeadSubmitted, QualifiedLead or Purchase with action_source set to business_messaging, messaging_channel set to whatsapp, and the ctwa_clid from the original chat. Meta can then match the sale to the ad click, and you can optimise for leads or purchases instead of raw conversations.

In practice this means your inbox needs a pipeline. When a salesperson moves a chat from New to Qualified or Won, an event goes to Meta. That is how our WhatsApp CRM for UAE teams is wired. More on the ad side in our guide to click to WhatsApp ads in the UAE.

Click to WhatsApp vs lead form ads

The calculator compares both side by side because they fail in different ways.

Click to WhatsApp adsLead form (instant form) ads
What you getA live chat with a verified WhatsApp numberA form entry: name, phone, email, answers
Next stepReply in the same chatCall or message someone who may not remember the ad
Where drop-off happensSlow or no reply from your sideFake or mistyped numbers, unanswered calls
QualificationQuestions asked in conversationQuestions fixed in the form
Messaging costFree for 72 hours if you reply within 24 hoursAny first WhatsApp message to them must be a paid template

Neither wins on paper. Put your own numbers into both columns. If your team cannot answer chats quickly, a lead form may come out ahead, and that is worth knowing before you spend.

Mistakes that wreck click to WhatsApp ads ROI

  • No one answering at night. Meta keeps serving the ad at 11pm. If nobody replies until 9am, those clicks are close to wasted, and some fall outside the 24-hour reply condition entirely on busy weekends.
  • Sending the same template to everyone. A lead who asked about a two-bedroom and a lead who asked about delivery times do not want the same follow-up on day four. Segment by what they asked.
  • Dropping the ctwa_clid. If your inbox does not store it, you cannot send conversions back, and the ad learns nothing.
  • Judging the channel on cost per conversation. A cheap conversation that never replies is expensive. Judge on cost per sale and ROAS.

About the numbers in this calculator

Every default in the calculator is a placeholder so the page shows something. None of them are benchmarks, and we are not claiming they are typical for the UAE or any industry. Replace each one with figures from your own Ads Manager and sales records.

Questions

How much do click to WhatsApp ads cost?

You pay Meta for the ad (clicks, impressions or conversations, depending on your setup) at auction prices that vary by audience, season and creative. The WhatsApp messages themselves are free for 72 hours if you reply within 24 hours of the first message. We do not publish typical costs because we cannot verify them for your market, so the calculator asks for your own.

Are WhatsApp messages free after a click to WhatsApp ad?

Yes, within limits. If the user messages you from the WhatsApp app on Android or iOS and you reply within 24 hours, a 72-hour free entry point window opens and all messages in it are free. After that, reopening the chat needs a paid template, set by Meta (about AED 0.183 for marketing in the UAE, approximate).

What is ctwa_clid?

It is the click ID Meta attaches to a WhatsApp chat that started from an ad. It arrives in the referral data of the first message. Send it back with conversion events through the Conversions API (action_source business_messaging) so Meta can match sales to ad clicks.

Should I optimise for conversations, leads or purchases?

Start with conversations if you have no conversion data flowing back. Once you are sending qualified-lead or purchase events through the Conversions API with enough volume, test optimising for those. Meta lists all three as options for ads that click to message.

Are click to WhatsApp ads better than lead form ads?

It depends on your team. Chats start warmer and can be qualified in conversation, but they need fast replies. Lead forms can be worked in batches, but numbers go stale and people forget the ad. Run both through the calculator with your own rates.
