Sending a payment link on WhatsApp in the UAE
There is no WhatsApp Pay in the UAE. What there is turns out to be better for most businesses: a utility template with a call-to-action button that opens your own gateway checkout, personalised per customer.
Short answer. Meta's native in-chat payments are not available in the UAE. You send a utility template containing a call-to-action URL button whose dynamic suffix carries the invoice or checkout ID. Cost is about AED 0.058, no marketing opt-in is needed, and it is not exposed to the marketing frequency cap.
Where WhatsApp Pay actually exists
This is worth stating plainly because a lot of UAE sales decks imply otherwise.
| Market | Native in-chat payment |
|---|---|
| India | Yes — via UPI |
| Singapore | Yes — business payments, cards and PayNow |
| Brazil | Direct card payments to businesses discontinued 15 January 2026; Pix, boleto and payment links continue |
| UAE | No — use a payment link |
The Brazil change matters beyond Brazil: it is a reminder that native rails get withdrawn, while a link to your own gateway does not.
The dynamic URL button, precisely
A WhatsApp template can carry a call-to-action button that opens a URL. The important mechanic is that the URL is split:
- The static base is fixed when the template is approved — for example
https://pay.yourbrand.ae/i/. You cannot change it per send. - The dynamic suffix is supplied at send time — for example the invoice ID
INV-10482.
So the customer taps one button and lands on their own checkout. The constraints to design around:
- Up to three call-to-action buttons per template.
- At most one phone-number button.
- Button label maximum 25 characters.
Design consequence. Your payment URLs must be short, stable, and prefixed by a base you will not want to change — changing it means a new template and another review round. Put a redirector on your own domain rather than pointing the base at a gateway you might switch.
Category and cost
A payment request for an order the customer placed is utility. That means no marketing opt-in, about AED 0.058 instead of roughly AED 0.183, and no exposure to Meta's per-user marketing frequency cap — error 131049, which on one UAE account we run accounted for 1,388 of 1,557 delivery failures. A payment request that silently fails to deliver is the worst possible message to lose, so keep it utility and keep offers out of it.
The chase cadence
- On order or quote acceptance — the payment template with the button.
- At 24 hours if unpaid — a short utility reminder, same button.
- At 72 hours — final reminder that states what happens next, whether that is the quote expiring or the stock being released.
If the customer replies at any point, the 24-hour service window opens and everything after that is free-form and free — so questions about instalments, VAT, or the payment method cost you nothing to answer.
Practical UAE notes
- Show the amount in AED in the message body, not only on the checkout page. People decide whether to tap based on the number they can see.
- State whether the amount is VAT inclusive. This is the single most common question a payment message generates.
- If you offer buy-now-pay-later, name it in the body. Availability changes the tap rate more than any wording change.
- Never put a bare IBAN in a marketing-category message. Bank-transfer instructions belong in a utility message tied to a real order.
Adjoltz builds these flows for UAE brands on Meta's official Cloud API — correct template categories, the buttons, and the inbox behind them. Messages at Meta's rate with zero markup, from $149/month.
Frequently asked questions
Can customers pay inside WhatsApp in the UAE?
No. Meta's native in-chat payments are available in India via UPI, in Singapore for business payments, and in Brazil for Pix, boleto and payment links after direct card payments to businesses were discontinued on 15 January 2026. In the UAE you send a link to your own payment gateway using a call-to-action URL button on a template.
How do I personalise a payment link in a WhatsApp template?
Use a call-to-action URL button with a dynamic URL. The static base of the URL is fixed when the template is approved and only the suffix is supplied at send time, so you pass the invoice or checkout ID as the suffix. Keep the base on a domain you control, because changing it requires a new template and another review.
Is a payment request a marketing or utility message?
Utility, provided it relates to an order or quote the customer already has. That means no marketing opt-in, a cost of around AED 0.058 rather than roughly AED 0.183, and no exposure to Meta's per-user marketing frequency cap. Adding a promotional line can get it reclassified as marketing at review.
How many buttons can a WhatsApp payment template have?
Up to three call-to-action buttons, of which at most one can be a phone-number button, and each button label can be at most 25 characters. In practice one Pay now button plus one Question? phone button covers most cases.
