Shopify WhatsApp integration for UAE stores
Order confirmations, COD checks, shipping updates and abandoned checkout reminders, sent from your Shopify store on your own WhatsApp number through Meta's official Cloud API.
Short version. Shopify now has native WhatsApp options: campaign sends in Shopify Messaging (since July 2026) and Meta's WhatsApp app for order updates. They cover the basics. Adjoltz wires Shopify events to Arabic and English templates, confirms COD orders before they ship, handles customer replies in a shared inbox, and bills Meta's fees at cost. Order and delivery messages are utility (~AED 0.058); abandoned checkout and win-back are marketing (~AED 0.183) and need opt-in.
What Shopify gives you natively on WhatsApp (September 2026)
Before you pay anyone, check what already exists. At the time of writing there are two first-party routes:
- Shopify Messaging, WhatsApp marketing. Shopify announced it in its changelog on 29 July 2026. You connect your own WhatsApp Business Account through Meta's Embedded Signup, submit templates to Meta, and send campaigns to customers who explicitly opted in. Shopify's help center describes it as a campaign tool. It does not say WhatsApp runs inside its marketing automations such as abandoned checkout, which are documented for email.
- The WhatsApp app by Meta on the Shopify App Store. Listed since 11 July 2025. Shoppers opt in at checkout and receive order updates. It is free to install; Meta bills message fees separately.
Two details matter for UAE stores. Shopify bills WhatsApp marketing per message, and its help center lists the UAE at US$0.100 per message at the time of writing. Meta's own UAE marketing rate is about AED 0.183 (roughly US$0.05). So the native route is simple, but you pay a clear premium per send. Second, Shopify Messaging cannot send WhatsApp marketing to US numbers. If you sell into the US, see abandoned cart recovery on WhatsApp for US stores.
Shopify Inbox, the store chat, does not document WhatsApp as a connected channel. Customer replies to your WhatsApp messages need a real inbox somewhere else.
What to send from a Shopify store, and which Meta category it is
Meta sorts every business-initiated template into a category, and the category sets the price and the rules. Get this wrong and a template gets reclassified to marketing, or rejected.
| Message | Shopify trigger | Meta category | Approx cost per message (AED, set by Meta) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Order confirmation | orders/create | Utility | ~0.058 |
| COD confirmation (confirm or cancel buttons) | orders/create, payment method is cash on delivery | Utility | ~0.058 |
| Shipped, with tracking link | fulfillments/create | Utility | ~0.058 |
| Out for delivery, delivered, failed attempt | fulfillment_events/create (courier status) | Utility | ~0.058 |
| Abandoned checkout reminder | checkouts/create or checkouts/update, no order after a delay | Marketing, opt-in required | ~0.183 |
| Back in stock | products/update or an inventory change | Marketing, unless the customer asked to be told about that item | ~0.183 (or ~0.058 if accepted as utility) |
| Win-back offer | Scheduled: no order in X days | Marketing | ~0.183 |
Rates are Meta's approximate UAE per-message prices since 1 July 2025. Free-form replies inside the 24-hour customer service window are free until 30 September 2026. From 1 October 2026 Meta charges those too (about AED 0.058). Check the UAE WhatsApp rate card for current numbers.
The pattern is simple. Anything about an order the customer already placed is utility. Anything that tries to get a new sale is marketing. A back-in-stock alert can count as utility when the customer tapped "notify me" for that exact product, because they asked for it. A "new arrivals you might like" message is marketing, however you word it. Details in our guide to the back-in-stock waitlist on WhatsApp.
How the Shopify WhatsApp integration is wired
- Your number, your WABA. The WhatsApp Business Account is created in your Meta Business portfolio and stays yours. We connect it to the official WhatsApp Cloud API. No unofficial gateways, no shared numbers.
- Shopify webhooks. The store sends events as they happen: orders/create for new orders, fulfillments/create and fulfillment_events/create for shipping, checkouts/create and checkouts/update for checkouts that don't finish. Each event maps to one approved template.
- Opt-in capture. Utility messages about an order need the customer's number and a reasonable expectation of contact. Marketing needs explicit opt-in. We add a WhatsApp consent option where your Shopify plan allows it (checkout, thank-you page or account page; what you can customise at checkout depends on your plan, so check Shopify's current docs) and store the consent on the customer record.
- Arabic and English templates. Each template is approved in both languages and picked from the customer's language or country. Names, order numbers and totals fill in from the Shopify order.
- Replies land in a shared inbox. When a customer answers "can you deliver after 6pm", a person or the AI front desk sees it with the order next to it. That is the part plug-ins usually skip.
Shopify COD confirmation on WhatsApp: the UAE reality
Cash on delivery is still common in the UAE, and every refused parcel costs you courier fees both ways plus stock stuck in transit. A COD confirmation template with two buttons, "Confirm order" and "Cancel", sent seconds after checkout, catches wrong addresses and changed minds before the courier leaves. Confirmed orders go out. Cancelled ones never ship. Silent ones get a second nudge or a call. It is a utility message, so it costs about AED 0.058. The full flow is in our guide to WhatsApp COD confirmation in the UAE.
Give the courier a location pin too. UAE addresses are often a building name and a landmark. A "share your location" reply to the shipping message saves a phone call on delivery day.
Abandoned checkout on WhatsApp: the rules
Shopify WhatsApp abandoned cart messages are marketing. That means three things. You need opt-in before you send. You pay the marketing rate. And Meta's per-user marketing frequency cap can drop the message silently (error 131049), so a checkout reminder is never guaranteed to arrive. Send one reminder, maybe two, with the cart link and a real reason to finish: delivery date, stock left, a question answered. Our guide on abandoned cart recovery on WhatsApp in the UAE covers timing and copy.
For reference, on a UAE account we operate (14,899 marketing sends to 3,293 contacts, Jun-Aug 2026), 79.2% of delivered marketing messages were read, 11.7% of contacts replied, and 6 opted out. That is one account, not a promise. It does show that people read WhatsApp and answer it, so someone has to be there to reply.
WhatsApp for Shopify: app plug-ins vs a managed setup
| Shopify app plug-in | Managed by Adjoltz | |
|---|---|---|
| Time to first message | Minutes to a day | About a week, including templates and Meta verification |
| Who writes and gets templates approved | You | We do, in Arabic and English |
| Meta message fees | Some apps add a markup; Shopify Messaging bills its own per-message rate | Billed at cost, zero markup |
| Replies from customers | Varies; often a basic inbox or none | Shared inbox with order context, AI front desk, human handover |
| Other channels | Usually WhatsApp only | WhatsApp, Instagram, Messenger, TikTok, email and more in one inbox |
| Monthly cost | Low, often a fixed app fee | Quoted per business |
If you run a small store, send order updates only and have time to write templates yourself, a plug-in is fine. Meta's own app is a reasonable start. A managed setup earns its cost when you have COD volume, Arabic-speaking customers, real reply traffic, or other tools in the mix. If Klaviyo already runs your email flows, the Klaviyo WhatsApp integration lets WhatsApp slot into the same segments instead of building a second marketing brain. For the wider picture, see WhatsApp automation in Dubai.
Whatever you choose, keep the WhatsApp number and the WABA in your own Meta Business portfolio. If a vendor owns them, leaving that vendor means losing your number and its quality history.
Want this run for you? Adjoltz sets it up and runs it on Meta's official API, in Arabic and English, with Meta's message fees billed at cost and nothing added. Tell us what you sell and how many people you message, and you get a quote back the same day.
Frequently asked questions
Does Shopify have a built-in WhatsApp integration?
Partly. Since July 2026 Shopify Messaging can send WhatsApp marketing campaigns to opted-in customers through your own WhatsApp Business Account, and Meta publishes a free WhatsApp app on the Shopify App Store for order updates with opt-in at checkout. Shopify's docs don't describe WhatsApp inside its abandoned checkout automations or a WhatsApp inbox, so check current docs before relying on either.
Is a Shopify abandoned cart message on WhatsApp marketing or utility?
Marketing. It tries to win a sale the customer hasn't made, so Meta classes it as marketing, it needs opt-in, and it costs about AED 0.183 per message in the UAE. Order confirmations, COD confirmations and delivery updates are utility, at about AED 0.058.
How does COD confirmation on WhatsApp work with Shopify?
When a cash-on-delivery order is created, Shopify sends a webhook and a utility template goes out with Confirm and Cancel buttons. The answer is written back to the order, so your team ships only confirmed orders. See our COD confirmation guide for the full flow.
Can I send WhatsApp messages in Arabic from Shopify?
Yes. Each template is approved by Meta per language, so we submit Arabic and English versions and choose one per customer based on their language or country. Order details fill in automatically from Shopify.
Do I keep my WhatsApp number if I stop working with Adjoltz?
Yes. The number and WhatsApp Business Account sit in your own Meta Business portfolio, and there is no lock-in. Ask for a quote and we will scope it around your order volume and which messages you want to send.
