How a WhatsApp link works
A WhatsApp click-to-chat link is a normal web address: https://wa.me/ followed by the full phone number in international format, with no plus sign, no leading zeros and no spaces. Anyone who taps it lands in a chat with that number, on their phone or on WhatsApp Web, without saving you as a contact first. Add ?text= and an encoded message and the chat opens with that message already typed. They still have to press send.
That last detail matters more than it looks. When the customer sends the first message, they opened the conversation, so replies inside the next 24 hours are free service messages on the WhatsApp Business API. A link turns an outbound cost into an inbound conversation.
Where to put your link
- Instagram and TikTok bio. One tap from profile to chat. Use a pre-filled message per platform ("Hi, from Instagram") so you know where the lead came from.
- Google Business Profile and your website. A chat button converts better than a contact form for most UAE buyers, who answer WhatsApp faster than email.
- QR codes on print. Packaging inserts, menus, shop windows, exhibition stands. Download the QR above; print it at least 3 cm wide with a white border.
- Email signatures and invoices. "Questions? WhatsApp us" with the link beats a phone number nobody calls.
What a link cannot do
A wa.me link starts a conversation. It does not answer it. If ten people tap your link at 11pm and nobody replies until the morning, the link did its job and you lost the leads anyway. Speed to reply is where the sale is won, which is why businesses that get real volume put an answering layer behind the link: an AI front desk that replies in seconds in Arabic or English, qualifies the lead, and hands the good ones to a person. For ads, a plain link is the weaker option. A Click-to-WhatsApp ad opens a 72-hour window in which every message is free and carries attribution back to the ad. If you are paying Meta for traffic, use the native ad format and track leads in a WhatsApp CRM rather than a bare link.

Common mistakes
- Leaving the zero in. UAE mobiles are written 050 123 4567 locally. In a link it is 971501234567. The generator strips the zero for you.
- Using a number that is on the personal app. It works, but your team cannot share the inbox and you get no delivery data. See WhatsApp Business vs personal for when to switch.
- A pre-filled message that sounds like spam. Keep it short and human. It is the first line of your conversation.
