Renewal reminders on WhatsApp in the UAE
The UAE runs on expiry dates. Emirates ID, residence visa, Ejari, mulkiya, motor insurance, trade licence, AMC, warranty. Every one of them is a reason for a customer to hear from you, and almost none of them need marketing consent.
Short answer. A renewal reminder is a utility template: about AED 0.058, no marketing opt-in, and not exposed to the marketing frequency cap. Send at T−60, T−30, T−7, T−1, and once after expiry. Put fees and fine amounts in variables, never in the fixed template text.
The template edit limit is the trap
This catches people six months in, not on day one. An approved WhatsApp template can be edited 10 times in a rolling 30-day window, or once in any 24-hour window. Rejected and paused templates can be edited without limit — which is a strange incentive, but that is how it works.
So if you bake a government fee, a fine amount, or a promotional rate into the fixed body text, you have created a maintenance liability. The UAE changes fees. Insurance premiums change every year. Your renewal price changes.
Rule. Anything that can change goes in a {{variable}}. Anything you cannot express as a
variable should be a link to the authority's own page, not a number you have transcribed. You will be wrong eventually,
and a wrong fine amount in an official-looking message is a real problem.
The reminder ladder
| When | Purpose | Shape |
|---|---|---|
| T−60 | Heads-up while there is time to gather documents | Utility, one button: Start renewal |
| T−30 | The main one — most action happens here | Utility, list of what is needed |
| T−7 | Urgency, with the consequence named | Utility, short |
| T−1 | Last call | Utility, one line |
| T+1 to T+7 | Grace-period recovery — the one everyone skips | Utility, no scolding |
The post-expiry message is the highest-value one in the ladder and the one most businesses never send, because their system marks the record as lapsed and stops. Several UAE renewals have a grace period, so an expired document is often still recoverable without penalty. Telling someone that is a genuine service.
What we can say about UAE grace periods
One concrete, checkable example: Emirates ID has a 30-day grace period after expiry, after which a late fine of AED 20 per day applies, capped at AED 1,000, under Ministerial Decision No. 25 of 2011. The fine accrues from the expiry date, not from the day the person notices.
We are deliberately not publishing a table of every UAE renewal fine. Those schedules change, they differ by emirate and by free zone, and a stale table on a marketing site is worse than no table. Link customers to the issuing authority. For the same reason, do not put fine amounts in template text — see the edit limit above.
Category, precisely
A renewal reminder for a service the customer already holds with you is utility. A renewal offer to someone whose policy is with a competitor is marketing — it needs opt-in, costs roughly AED 0.183, and is exposed to error 131049, the per-user marketing frequency cap that silently drops messages after the API has already returned success.
The distinction is whether the message is about their existing thing or about your offer. Insurance brokers get this wrong most often, because the renewal quote genuinely is both.
Sector notes
- Motor insurance. Renewal is annual and price-shopped. The T−30 message is where you either keep the customer or lose them to an aggregator. Include the renewal premium as a variable.
- Vehicle registration. Testing and renewal are separate steps in most emirates. A reminder that only says "renew your registration" misses that the test has to happen first.
- Ejari and tenancy. Renewal notice periods are contractual, so the reminder ladder should be anchored to the notice deadline, not just the expiry date.
- AMC and warranty. The strongest one commercially, because there is no regulator forcing the customer to act. Without your reminder, most simply lapse.
- Trade licence. B2B, so send to the person who actually handles PRO work, not the signatory.
Build the date, not the campaign
The mistake is running renewals as monthly blasts. A renewal reminder is per-record and date-triggered: every customer has their own expiry date, so the system must fire off that date, not off a calendar. If you find yourself exporting a list each month, the automation is not built yet.
Adjoltz builds these flows for UAE brands on Meta's official Cloud API — correct template categories, the buttons, and the inbox behind them. Messages at Meta's rate with zero markup, from $149/month.
Frequently asked questions
Is a renewal reminder marketing or utility on WhatsApp?
Utility, if it is about a service the customer already holds with you, which means no marketing opt-in, about AED 0.058 instead of roughly AED 0.183, and no exposure to Meta's marketing frequency cap. A renewal offer aimed at someone whose policy or contract is with a competitor is marketing and needs opt-in.
How many times can I edit an approved WhatsApp template?
Ten times in a rolling 30-day window, or once in any 24-hour window. Rejected and paused templates can be edited without limit. This is why fees, prices and fine amounts should be passed as variables rather than written into the fixed template body.
When should renewal reminders be sent?
A ladder of five works well: 60 days out as a heads-up, 30 days out as the main one, 7 days out with the consequence named, 1 day out as a last call, and one message after expiry during any grace period. The post-expiry message is the highest-value and the one most businesses never send.
What is the Emirates ID renewal grace period?
Thirty days after expiry. After that a late fine of AED 20 per day applies, capped at AED 1,000, under Ministerial Decision No. 25 of 2011, and it accrues from the expiry date rather than from the day the holder notices. Always link customers to the issuing authority rather than quoting amounts inside a template, because schedules change.
